A LEGENDARY NIGHT
Fans have been waiting weeks for Lacey Evans to take on the US Champion Sonya Deville. Everyone has known for awhile that Deville cheated to win the US Title off of Ember Moon and it seems as though Evans is the woman who can dethrone the illegitimate champ. Evans did just that in a masterclass; it was just her second match in GAW making her one of the quickest wrestlers ever to win a title in the promotion. Her M9 was absolutely deadly and it continued to be when she used it to beat the champ.
The GAW Classic rolls on with Bandido’s Group 2 debut against the Amazing Red. Red gave Ospreay all he could handle in the Classic opener and he was even better here against Bandido. It was a fast-paced affair exactly as we expected; both men battled through quick strikes and spectacular dives. But it was Bandido, the IWGP Jr Heavyweight Champion, who won the day after an incredible move combination inside and outside the ring.
After the match, though, Swerve Strickland spoiled the celebrations. Swerve came to call out Rey Mysterio, Bandido’s mentor, claiming the GAW legend is washed and Swerve is the future. Mysterio stepped up as expected, telling Swerve he’d fight if Swerve agreed to give up his stolen Cruiserweight Title if Mysterio wins. Swerve agreed but on the condition that Mysterio must use his influence to bring the title back officially if Swerve wins. We could be weeks away from having a GAW Cruiserweight Title once again.
Next up, Anthony Ogogo makes his GAW debut as the Proper 12 Locker Room’s representative in the GAW Classic. No one knows anything about Ogogo as a wrestler although his boxing credentials speak for themselves. On this night, the Guv’nor proved boxing and wrestling may not be so different. He ran straight through Marcel Barthel, tossing him up in the air and nearly beheading him with a right hand to win his debut.
Backstage, Adam Cole sends a clear message to the Black and Gold: things have to be different now that Cole is no longer the champion.
In the semi-main, we are treated to possibly the greatest tag team match in GAW history. The Rascalz got their opportunity to challenge the House of Black for the Tag Team Championships. If you only have 15 minutes today, use them to watch this match. At the end of it all, Bobby Lashley pulled off one of the greatest reversals in history, turning a Zach Wentz stomp into a massive cutter to get the win and retain the titles. Simply spectacular.
Backstage, redDragon has clearly taken Adam Cole’s word to heart. They were caught attacking Claudio Castagnoli and Davey Richards from behind and beating them down.
In the main event, Johnny Gargano makes his first World Title defense against Joe Coffey. Gallus have attacked Gargano savagely several times, now the champ gets his chance at revenge. And Gargano took full advantage of it. His speed and agility stopped Coffey from being able to get a read on him and eventually Gargano locked in the Gargano escape to win the match and retain the title.
