TAG TEAM HISTORY IN PRIMETIME
After two title defenses on night 1 we get three on night 2; but will we see the title change that eluded us on Monday? We begin with Shayna Baszler defending the US Championship against Rosita. This is Rosita’s first match of Season 2 without Hernandez and it showed as Rosita struggled to get a good grip on the match. But she remained competitive even as Baszler attempted to overwhelm the former champ early on. Rosita gained the upper hand and looked to set Baszler up for the Exchange when the incredible happened: Paul Heyman strode out to the ring. The legend distracted Rosita causing the former champ to turn her back on the Queen of Spades. This proved to be her death sentence as Baszler came up behind her and locked in the Kirufuda Clutch to retain. Heyman’s motivations for his actions are still unknown.
Next up, undefeated RAW Champion MidNight defends his title against Derrick Cole, the man who’s probably his toughest opponent so far. MidNight was a man possessed from the early stages of the match as he had an answer for everything Cole did… except for Marco Diaz. Cole’s LVC teammate consistently got himself involved, opening MidNight for two Cole Cuts and several pinning predicaments. It’s the closest anyone has come to dethroning MidNight but the undefeated champ was up to the challenge each time. MidNight got the upper hand for good when he hit a Sleepwalker on Cole. But he wasn’t done. He hit another Sleepwalker on Diaz on the outside before hitting a second one on Cole for the win.
Devon Andrews gets his first sanctioned GAW match against Joshua Moore. Moore is awfully brave for challenging Andrews to this match and he found out first hand why Andrews is considered the top free agent in the world. Andrews hit the rookie with a Kiss the Canvas and a Final Judgement for the win.
Backstage, Derrick Cole turns Marco Diaz’s attention to what he says is a bigger issue than the RAW Title: the way Academy wrestlers are treated by Storm. Cole ominously suggests that they focus on that problem before anything else.
In the main event, the Wing Collectors make their first defense of the Tag Team Titles in the first ever tag team three way dance in Academy history. Island Nation and the Titans stepped up to challenge the new champions. But Island Nation are still inexperienced and, without the Titans Rules, the Titans were no match for Wesley and Omega. The new champs turned in a legendary tag team performance. eliminating all four opposing wrestlers in 10 minutes. Franky Omega notched three; two with the devastating Arm Collector, one with the Omega Theory. Andrew Wesley made the final elimination, nearly kicking Lieter’s head off with West of the Rising Sun to cap off an incredible tag team maneuver from the champs. The Wing Collectors end the night still the champs after a performance none of us will forget.
In primetime on night 3, Chris Danger has his first GAW match against the face of the Academy Eddie Hernandez so make sure you subscribe!
